We are trying a different approach this year for driving Skills USA membership. Introducing the First Annual SkillsUSA-only Cookout and Game Day for paid SKillsUSA members only. There were sessions for both morning and afternoon classes. The only requirement for attending was paid SkillsUSA membership dues. Our great support staff grilled plenty of hamburgers for all complete with chips, cookies, and soda.

Mike Klein State Educator Of The Year

Great Plains electrical instructor Mike Klein has a big heart and an unwavering commitment to children, especially to foster children. Mike has been the driving force behind the Comanche County Foster Children Christmas project the past six years. The project has also become he most anticipated community service project at Great Plains as students and staff have purchased, wrapped, and sorted according to child more than 1,000 Christmas gifts for 260 foster children. Great Plains salutes Mike for his and selection as the Oklahoma Association of Career and Technical Education Educator of the Year for Community Service in 2012.

The Foster Children Christmas project unites students and staff at Great Plains in a way that no other project has done. Each department, class or individual is able to make a difference in a child’s life. The children’s list of Christmas “wishes” is usually very short and often include items that most of us take for granted; warm clothes, gloves, books and compact discs. As students and staff raise money and shop for the gifts they are struck by the realization of their own blessings.

The project is near and dear to Mike especially since he has been a foster parent since 1997 and has adopted eight children, six from foster care. Mike is particularly proud that one of his daughters has decided to “pay it forward” by becoming a foster parent herself. Mike says, “You never know how your actions will affect someone else”. Mike’s actions have created a legacy of service to children that will continue for a very long time.
